Banana Bread Recipe Contest

IMG_1673 I was just writing a piece about Hawaii for the Boston Globe and started craving banana bread. Unfortunately I don’t have a knock-your-socks-off recipe, and no bakery in San Francisco does my favorite sweet bread like the aunties of Hawaii. Hint hint, fine bakers of the Bay Area!

Well what’s a girl who doesn’t have time to dive into Pinterest for recipe ideas to do?

Host a banana bread recipe contest!

You read right. I am looking for your favorite banana bread recipe–your tried and true; the one your kids beg for, or that forces you to inhale the whole loaf in one go, you know what I’m talking about.

Here’s the details:

Deadline: November 1, 2013.

Send your best banana bread recipes to me via Pinterest, my Facebook author page, or as a comment to this post. I will test out the recipes at my Backroads and Byways Hawaii book release party at Badger Books in San Francisco on November 3 at 4pm (let me know when you submit your recipe if want to bake a loaf and bring it to the party!).

The yummiest recipe (selected by partygoers that night, and announced on November 6, 2013) will get a free signed copy of my new Backroads and Byways of Hawaii, and a free consultation about a Hawaii itinerary, including hotels, restaurants, and of course the best places to score banana bread.

    Banana Bread Waipio Wayside B&B

    Pre-heat oven to 350

    Butter a bundt pan

    In food processor mix until blended
    ½ cup softened organic butter
    ¾ cup organic Palm sugar
    1 tsp pure vanilla

    Add to processor & mix until blended:
    3 large bananas

    In a small bowl mix together:
    2 cups organic flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp baking soda
    ¼ tsp salt
    ½ tsp organic powdered ginger
    1 tsp organic Ceylon Cinnamon

    Alternately in food processor add to banana
    mixture following then pulse until incorporated:
    ½ buttermilk
    & flour mixture

    Mix in 1 cup of the best chocolate you can afford
    I use Scharffenberger 65% chunks

    Gently spoon into prepared bundt pan

    Cook for 50 to 60 minutes until cake tester comes
    out clean.

  2. Here’s mine:
    Bananarama Yum Bread
    1/2 cup butter
    1 cup sugar
    2 eggs, beaten
    4 bananas, mashed
    1 1/2 cups flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    1/3 cup semi sweet chocolate bits
    1/3 cup toasted walnuts finely chopped
    Directions:

    1.Cream together butter and sugar.
    2.Add eggs and mashed bananas.
    3.Combine well.
    4.Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Add vanilla.Fold in chocolate bits
    5.Pour into greased and floured loaf pan.Top with walnuts. Push slightly to get them to stick.
    6.Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes.
    7.Keeps well, refrigerated if there’s any left!
